Talking to a Manager

JAMES

James has some problems at work. He works a second job at night, so sometimes he gets up late. When he gets to work, someone is parked in his parking spot. He teaches all day, and then when it is time for lunch, he sees that someone stole his lunch [potatoes]. He tries to make copies for the students, but the copy machine keeps breaking. The other workers are angry because they think he broke the machine. Finally, he is ready to go home. Then his supervisor asks him to stay late because another worker is sick.

James is exhausted and frustrated! He wants to talk to his manager. What should he say?

Issues in Minnesota

We all know that Minnesota is a wonderful place to live, but there are still many problems. What are some problems that you see here? What are some things we can fix?

Minnesota Public Radio has a list of articles you can read about Social Issues in Minnesota. Click HERE to visit that website.

Minnesota has a lot of refugees! Life is hard for people coming from refugee camps to Minnesota. How can we help refugees?

A lot of people are worried about violence in schools. Sometimes kids fight; sometimes kids bring guns and knives to school. What can we do to help schools and kids?

How can we help homeless people in Minnesota? Many people are homeless because they are sick and need medicine. Many homeless people are veterans of war. Many people are homeless because they lost their jobs. Many homeless people are children. What can we do?

Agree or Disagree?

There is always more than one way to look at something!

One example is that of the new trains coming to St. Paul.

On one side, the trains are faster than buses. They can hold more people than buses. They are clean and make less pollution than cars or buses.

On the other side, the construction is a problem for many people.

There are machines everywhere, and the cars have to go very slow now. Many businesses say that they might have to close, because customers can't get to their doors. Also, the construction is very expensive.

St. Paul Public Libraries

Public libraries are a great community resource.

At the library, you can read books and magazines, use the computers, look for jobs, and take classes.

You can see a schedule of classes at Riverview Library if you click HERE.

Using the library is free if you have a library card.  To get a library card, you need to live in St. Paul.  You show your ID card to the librarian, and she helps you fill out an application.

You can borrow books, movies, and CDs for free, but if they are late, they charge you a fine.  How long can you keep the books?  How much is the fine?  How do you renew books, movies, and CDs?

The library is open most days of the week, at morning and at night, so more people can go.  Click HERE to see the library schedules.

Do you like the library?  Why?  What are your favorite things to do there?  Please click "Comments" to answer.

Neighborhood House is here for you!

Neighborhood House is located inside the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center for Community Building.

Neighborhood House has been in St. Paul since 1897.  Wow!  How many years is that?

The Education Program has many classes for adults: English classes, GED classes, computer classes, and citizenship classes.  Education is important for your life in the United States, and we want you to succeed!  We have classes all day and in the evening, too.  If you need childcare, you can talk to Brooke and she will help you.

The Basic Needs Program wants to make sure that you have enough food in your house!  If you are a student here, you can go to the food shelf once a month and get food for your family.  They can also help you find free clinics and winter coats for your children.  You can ask teacher Jon about the services they offer.

The Youth Leadership Program gives children fun and educational experiences to help them grow into leaders.  In the Youth Center, they can get help with their homework, draw, sing, dance, and play basketball.  In the College Access Center, they can learn about universities and getting money to go to school.
